Tips for Dealing with “What Statement Is True?” Questions

The true-or-false quizzes could be mind-bending. So, we wanted you to have some tips and tricks before taking the test. Here is how you can sharpen your skills as a lie-detecting machine.

The whole sentence should be true—not most of it.

One of the primary mistakes of test-taking is judging the validity of a statement by its parts. In this case, the participant might call a statement true because it looks “mostly” factual. For a sentence to be correct, it has to consist of 100% true arguments. For instance, the following judgment is wrong: “Christmas day is on December 25, New Year’s Day is on January 1. And Valentine’s Day is on February 16.” As you can see, the last part of the statement is false. Therefore, the whole argument is untrue.

Avoid skimming the question.

Make sure to read the whole text when asked, “which of the following statements is true?” One of the common mistakes of the participants is speed-reading during the true-or-false quiz. Most questions and arguments in such tests are designed to trick you. So, flicking through them might lead to misinterpretations and wrong choices.

Watch out for the absolute qualifiers.

Words like always, often, and never can change the validity of a statement drastically. For instance, it is okay to say, “the sun always rises in the east and sets in the west.” But you cannot say, “it often rises in the east.” So, pay attention to the absolute qualifiers used in the tests.

Overanalyzing leads to mistakes.

Overthinking and overanalyzing your answers makes it more difficult to deal with questions such as “which of the following is true?” So, it is okay to trust your instincts and choose the option you think is correct—unless the test has negative points for wrong answers.
